10 Upcoming Movies You Should Look Out For In April 2022 – CBR – Comic Book Resources

2022 kicks off with some big April movies, from sequels to spin-offs and brand new titles worth checking out.
While new stand-alone films will be released this year, 2022 will mainly bring more installments in popular franchises – like Fantastic Beasts, Jurassic Park and Toy Story, to name a fewSeveral sequels are also scheduled for films that premiered years ago, like Hocus Pocus 2, Legally Blonde 3, and Avatar 2.

While many popular movies are set to release this summer or winter, there are also several important releases this spring on both streaming services and in theaters. After major delays from the COVID-19 pandemic, these films will finally hit the big screen in the next couple of weeks.
To kick off the month of April, Marvel strikes again with their upcoming superhero movie Morbius. The film is based on the eponymous Marvel Comics character Morbius, The Living Vampire. Morbius is recognized as the third film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.

Morbius stars Jared Leto as the titular character, alongside Doctor Who star Matt Smith, who’s playing a character named Loxias Crown. Originally scheduled for a July 2020 release, the movie will finally be unveiled on April 1 and is expected to eventually release on Disney+ and possibly Netflix due to their deal with Sony.
It’s a hard knock life to release on the same day as a Marvel film. Better Nate Than Ever is an upcoming musical comedy that will debut on Disney+ on April 1. The film is based on Tim Federle’s 2013 novel of the same name.
Better Nate Than Ever follows the life of Nate Foster, a 13-year-old from Pittsburgh who has big dreams to become a star in Broadway musicals. Although, Nate is never cast in leading roles, and later sneaks to New York City with his best friend Libby to accomplish his theater dreams. BNTE features Joshua Bassett as Nate’s older brother Anthony and Lisa Kudrow as Nate’s aunt.
Previously titled Violence of Action, The Contractor follows the dangerous adventures of James Harper, a former U.S. Special Forces sergeant who has been involuntarily discharged. Known for his roles as James T. Kirk in the Star Trek reboot films and as Steve Trevor in the Wonder Woman films, Chris Pine stars as James, working alongside Ben Foster, Gillian Jacobs, and Kiefer Sutherland.
James and his best friend travel overseas as members of a private contracting organization but land themselves in all sorts of trouble. The Contractor will open in theaters, On Demand, and Digital on April 1. The film will arrive on Paramount+ and Showtime later in 2022.
The Sonic the Hedgehog movies have faced their fair share of backlash, which even led to major art-style changes. Ben Schwartz reprises his voice-acting role as Sonic in the upcoming sequel, which will release in theaters on April 8. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 takes place after the events of the first film and marks the formal introduction of Sonic’s sidekick from the games, Tails. Colleen O’Shaughnessey, known for her various anime voice-acting roles like Ino Yamanaka in Naruto, voices Tails in the Sonic sequel.
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is the third installment in the Fantastic Beasts series, based on J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter franchise. The movie takes place almost four years after the events of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. The Secrets of Dumbledore is set in the 1930s, just before World War II broke out and wizards became involved.

COVID-19 delays and Johnny Depp’s recasting with Mads Mikkelsen pushed the original theatrical release date from November 2021 to April 15 of this year. The Secrets of Dumbledore features familiar faces like Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander and Ezra Miller as Credence Barebone. The movie will premiere on HBO Max 45 days after its theatrical release, and two more Fantastic Beasts films are expected.
The Northman is an upcoming historical film set during the 10th century in Iceland. The movie follows Alexander Skarsgård’s character, a Viking prince named Amleth, during his quest for revenge after his father’s murder. Considering The Northman is based on William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, audiences expect plenty of drama mixed in with a lot of bloodshed. The Northman is scheduled to release in theaters on April 22 and features additional dominant names in the acting industry, from Anya Taylor-Joy, to Nicole Kidman, and even Icelandic singer Björk.
If moviegoers want to take a break from the nail-biting action and fantasy that’ll dominate April, check out this upcoming Disneynature documentary film. Known for her roles in Capote and Get Out, Academy Award nominee Catherine Keener narrates Polar Bear, which will release on Disney+ on April 22. The movie follows the adventures of a mother polar bear in the Arctic, and her lessons to her cubs on how to navigate the frigid temperatures to survive. Polar Bear is directed by Alastair Fothergill and Jeff Wilson, who also directed the 2019 film Penguins. 
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is an upcoming dark comedy directed by Tom Gormican, written by himself and Kevin Etten (known for his writing contributions to both Scrubs and Desperate Housewives)In a hilarious but unexpected twist, Nicolas Cage portrays… Nicolas Cage? That said, the film is not a documentary and will premiere in theaters on April 22.
In The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Nic accepts a $1 million offer to travel to Spain to attend a birthday party of an incredibly wealthy Nic Cage super-fan, played by Pedro Pascal. Nic will jump back into several of his past roles to save his wife and daughter from a drug cartel. It’s sure to be a wild ride.
The Bad Guys is an upcoming animated comedy film produced by DreamWorks and distributed by Universal Pictures. The film marks the directorial debut of Pierre Perifel and is based on Aaron Blabey’s eponymous children’s book series. Various stars like Sam Rockwell, Awkwafina, and Anthony Ramos appear as anthropomorphic animals.

The Bad Guys is similar to the concept of The Secret Life of Pets but follows an animal gang, each likely to fill an important role within the organization. The film is scheduled to release in theaters on April 22.
Many anime fans anticipate the April 28 release of Bubble on Netflix. The film is set in Tokyo and follows the life of Hibiki, a young male protagonist who meets a girl named Uta who has mysterious powers after he lands himself in danger. Tokyo is littered with unusual instances of gravity and mystical bubbles. The appealing visuals and the contribution of Attack on Titan director Tetsurō Araki are a sure draw for many viewers. Bubble also features well-known voice actors, like Marina Inoue (Armin from Attack on Titan) and Yuki Kaji (Eren Yeager from Attack on Titan and Shouto Todoroki from My Hero Academia)
