BYU football vs. UAB in Independence Bowl: Score prediction, scouting report – Shreveport Times

BYU will face Alabama-Birmingham in the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl on Dec. 18 (2:30 p.m. CT, ABC)  in Shreveport’s Independence Stadium.
BYU (10-2) picked up its 10th win in consecutive seasons by defeating Southern Cal 35-31 in its regular-season finale. That allowed the Cougars to move up to No. 14 in the USA TODAY AFCA Coaches poll. The Cougars become the highest-ranked team to play in the I-Bowl. LSU, at No. 15 in 1997, had been the highest-ranked invitee.
The Cougars were ranked No. 10 in both polls earlier this season after a 5-0 start but dropped significantly after back-to-back road losses at Boise State (26-17) and Baylor (38-24).
BYU VS. UAB: Independence Bowl lands Cougars and Blazers
BYU went 5-0 against Pac-12 Conference schools this fall, including wins over nationally ranked Utah and Arizona State. BYU also defeated Virginia to earn the most victories (6) over Power Five conference teams in school history. The Cougars recorded double-digit wins for the 18th time in school history.
By accepting an invitation to compete in the I-Bowl, the Blazers (8-4) land their fifth bowl game in school history, including last year’s Gasparilla Bowl game against South Carolina that was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. UAB has won just one previous bowl game and that came in 2018 against Northern Illinois.
The UAB football program was shut down in 2014 by school president Ray Watts after a review of the school’s finances. The school opted to reinstate football in 2017 and the Blazers have continued to grow their program under coach Bill Clark, securing bowl eligibility for five consecutive seasons.
BYU 42, UAB 14: BYU’s victories over multiple Power Five schools gives the Cougars the upper hand against the Blazers, who lost 56-7 to Georgia.
