ENG vs AFG T20 WC Updates: Liam Livingstone remained unbeaten on 29 as England registered a five-wicket win over Afghanistan at Perth Stadium on Saturday. It was not a clinical performance by England with the bat as they batted with a conservative approach in the 113-run chase. There were some questionable calls by the England team when it comes to their batting order, however, they were too good with the ball and in the field to outclass Read More
Sam Curran continues his sensational form with the ball as he claimed a five-wicket haul to restrict Afghanistan to a below-par score in Perth. It was a collective bowling performance from English pacers but Curran stood out with his 5/10. The Afghan batters didn’t look prepared to face the tough challenge from English pacers who troubled them with pace, bounce and swing on a surface which was offering everything.
While England didn’t embrace their fearless batting approach with the bat as players like Alex Hales and Dawid Malan failed to get going. Liam Livingstone scored unbeaten 29 runs to get the job done, he played with a lot of maturity without taking any risks. While Afghanistan bowlers did show a fighting spirit but a couple of dropped catches pull them down in the game apart from their batting.
England register a five-wicket win in their first match of the 2022 T20 World Cup. It was a dominant show from England with the ball and in the field, while they did enough with the bat to outclass Afghanistan. Not the most comprehensive performance with the bat but England will take it. Afghanistan were 20-25 runs short with the bat and they also dropped a couple of catches which hurt them in this match. England 113/5 in 18.1 overs beat Afghanistan 112 all out by 5 wickets
Four runs came off Fazalhaq Farooqi’s final over. Nine runs are needed from the last three overs and Afghanistan are still showing a fighting spirit on the field which is commendable. Liam Livingstone is not looking to play any risky show here as the bowling has been top-class from Afghanistan here. ENG 104/5 in 17 overs
OUT! Rashid Khan opens his wicket account in 2022 T20 World Cup. Hary Brook chose the wrong bowler to attack as he completely mistimed it and Ibrahim Zadran took a comfortable catch at long-on. The required run rate is 3.43 as England are well ahead in the game. AFG 97/5 in 15.2 overs
A couple of boundaries from Liam Livingstone as England are inches closer to victory. 14 runs came off the over as England need 18 runs to win now. Livingstone might look to finish it early. ENG 95/4 in 15 overs
OUT! Sensational catch from Mohammad Nabi! It was low a quick and Nabi dived to his right to dismiss Dawid Malan for 18. Mujeeb-ur-Rahman claims his first wicket of the night as Afghanistan still look to pull off a heist here. However, the required run rate is well below 6 here. ENG 81/4 in 13.5 overs
Rashid Khan has managed to put a brake on the scoring rate but he hasn’t been able to take a wicket so far. England need 42 runs to win from eight overs and only wickets can pull Afghanistan on top in this game. It will be interesting to see how Liam Livingstone approaches this chase from here. ENG 71/3 in 12 overs
OUT! BIG BLOW! Mohammad Nabi castles Ben Stokes for just 2. It was an arm ball and Stokes was completely beaten by it. The southpaw charged down the ground and the ball got deflected from his pads and hit timber. Afghanistan are crawling back in the game. ENG 65/3 in 10. 4 overs
Another tidy over from Rashid Khan as only three runs came off it. Two quality left-handers Ben Stokes and Dawid Malan are in the middle and Liam Livingstone is yet to come so England don’t have to worry much as Sam Curran and Moeen Ali are also there in the line-up. ENG 62/2 in 10 overs
OUT! Alex Hales never looked settled tonight as this time he chose to play it over mid-wicket but didn’t get the best of timing on it as Fazalhaq Farooqi grabbed a good running catch. Fareed Malik gets his first wicket of the night and Afghanistan need a couple more to put pressure on the opposition. ENG 52/2 in 8.4 overs
Rashid Khan came into the attack on the expected note and he delivered a tidy over as only four runs came off it. Rashid has to spin his web around the English batters here to pull off a heist. Alex Hales doesn’t look very settled here with his approach. ENG 44/1 in 7 overs
The powerplay is over and England have put 40 runs on the scoreboard but Jos Buttler is back in the pavilion. Afghanistan have not used Rashid Khan so far which means he will be coming into the attack soon to put the brake on the scoring rate. ENG 40/1 in 5 overs
OUT! A big wicket for Afghanistan as Jos Buttler flicks it over mid-wicket where Mujeeb ur Rahman grabs an easy catch. Afghanistan were in desperate need of that wicket but they need more to bounce back into the game. Dawid Malan is the new man in and England will look to chase it down quickly. ENG 35/1 in 5 overs
Alex Hales got an extra life here and he punished the next ball for a six. It was an easy chance for Qais who was standing at the point but he put it down. Hales, who is in good form, punished the bowler straightaway with a six over long-on. England in cruise control here. ENG 34/0 in 4.3 overs
England are marching towards the target quite patiently. They are not looking in any kind of hurry. Afghanistan have only one way to get back into the game i.e. by taking wickets. The Afghan bowlers have not caused any trouble so far as they lack the pace to get something out of this surface. ENG 21/0 in 3 overs
Jos Buttler is looking in good touch as he has already hit a couple of boundaries. Afghanistan have to bring Rashid Khan into the attack early here. He has a good match-up with Buttler in IPL and if Afghanistan want to bounce they need to get rid of Buttler early. ENG 14/0 in 2 overs
A good first over from Fazalhaq Farooqi as only five runs came off it. England have an advantage here as they don’t have the Required Run Rate pressure on them. England will not hurry here as Afghanistan need wickets to bounce back otherwise it will be too late. ENG 5/0 in 1 over
Alex Hales and Jos Buttler are out in the middle to start the chase for England. Fazalhaq Farooqi to start the proceedings with the new ball.

Sam Curran You Beauty! The left-arm pacer claims a five-wicket haul to wrap up Afghanistan’s innings here with two balls to spare. Absolutely sensational from Curran with the ball as he kept taking wickets at regular interval to hurt Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Mark Wood and Ben Stokes also took two-wicket each to pin Afghanistan down. AFG 112 all-out in 19.4 overs
Earlier, Sam Curran claimed a five-wicket haul as England bowled out Afghanistan for just 112 in 19.4 overs.
England skipper Jos Buttler won the toss and elected to bowl against Afghanistan at Perth Stadium. The England skipper backed his team to chase down the total. England dropped Chris Jordan, David Willey, Phil Salt and Tymal Mills from the XI. While Afghanistan skipper Mohammad Nabi was confident at the toss to take down England.
Jos Buttler and Co. will look to start their campaign on a high against a confident Afghanistan side. England entered the T20 World Cup after beating Pakistan and Australia in the T20I series. They have one of the most destructive batting line-ups in T20I cricket and their fearless approach is going to be trouble for many teams including their Saturday opponents Afghanistan who rely heavily on their spinners to get the job done.
Afghanistan impressed many with their performance in Asia Cup 2022 but they lost some close matches which they look to avoid here. They will look to make an impact by causing an upset against England to announce their arrival at the mega T20 WC.
Meanwhile, the pitch is expected to offer pace and bounce at Perth which gave an advantage to England as they have some quality pacers who can hit the deck hard.
