ACA health care marketplace enrollment is open now

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WV News) — West Virginians who need health insurance through the federal health insurance marketplace at the beginning of the new year have just over five weeks left to sign up online.
ACA health care marketplace enrollment is open now
For coverage to begin at the first of the year, the deadline to register is Dec. 15. Those who need coverage by Feb. 1 have until Jan. 15 to register.
Once again, First Choice Services will provide navigator services in West Virginia for individuals who need assistance signing up for health insurance through the Marketplace, Medicaid and CHIP, the Children’s Health Insurance Program; or applying for financial assistance.
The assistance is free and can be accessed by calling the WV Navigator program at 304-356-5834 or visiting www.ACANavigator.com. In-person assistance is available at WV Navigator offices in Fairmont, Charleston, Martinsburg and Huntington. Enrollment events also will be held in locations across the state to assist people on a walk-in basis.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services invested a record $98.9 million in grant funding to 59 organizations to provide navigator services. First Choice Services was one of those recipients, receiving a $1.05 million grant.
The vast majority of people who are eligible for health insurance through the Marketplace are also available for subsidies to help offset the cost. The Inflation Reduction Act extended the premium tax credits for Affordable Care Act plants through 2025, making the subsidies available to people with incomes of up to 400% of the federal poverty line — $54,360 for a single person and $111,000 for a family of four.
Premium payments are also now capped at 8.5% of household income.
Family members who may not have been eligible for Marketplace coverage in previous years may be this year after a rule change that allows family members of employees who are offered affordable self-coverage, but not affordable family coverage to purchase family coverage through the Marketplace.
“Most people will be able to qualify for substantially lower costs this year if they get their insurance on the Marketplace,” said Jeremy Smith, program director for WV Navigator. “We are really urging people to look at the new plans and prices that are being released this year. In a lot of cases, the plans are more affordable than we have ever seen. Even if you have looked into insurance on the Marketplace in past years and were not very happy, you should definitely look into it again this year.”
According to Smith, those already on a Marketplace plan need to re-enroll and should check the network and prescription coverage for changes and updated information to check for additional cost savings that might be available to them.
