The home of the Los Angeles Kings will be renamed Crypto.com Arena, effective Dec. 25.
It is a 20-year naming rights agreement for the arena. Crypto.com and AEG, which owns the Kings and the arena complex, announced the deal Wednesday.
“Known as the Creative Capital of the World, the city of Los Angeles and the people who call it home have always been pioneers, pushing the boundaries and innovating as the undeniable global leaders of culture and entertainment,” Crypto.com co-founder and CEO Kris Marszalek said. “We’re very excited about partnering with AEG and investing long term in this city, starting with Crypto.com Arena in the heart of downtown, and using our platform in new and creative ways so that cryptocurrency can power the future of world class sports, entertainment and technology for fans in L.A. and around the world.”
The arena has been called Staples Center since it opened Oct. 17, 1999, with a Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band concert as its first event. It is also home to the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers, and the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA.
The Kings played their first game at Staples Center on Oct. 20, 1999, a 2-2 tie against the Boston Bruins. They have won each of their two Stanley Cup championships at the arena, defeating the New Jersey Devils 6-1 in Game 6 of the 2012 Cup Final and celebrated a 3-2 double-overtime win against the New York Rangers in Game 5 of the 2014 Cup Final.
Prior to the 1999-2000 season, the Kings played home games at The Forum in Inglewood, California. Because of Forum construction delays, they played their first NHL home game at the Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, California, on Oct. 14, 1967, a 4-2 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers. Their first game at The Forum was a 2-0 loss to the Flyers on Dec. 30, 1967.
