Probe launched into racist recordings of L.A. politicians – New York Daily News

The Los Angeles Police Department has launched an investigation into the leaked racist recordings that sparked uproar and the ouster of the City Council’s president.
Los Angeles police Chief Michel Moore told reporters Tuesday that the department had “initiated a criminal investigation into an allegation of eavesdropping” related to a private conversation between Councilmembers Nury Martinez, Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo, as well as Ron Herrera, President of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor.
He added that all four people involved in the leaked audio, captured last year and made public earlier this month, told authorities that they had been “unlawfully and surreptitiously recorded.”
So far, there are no suspects, Moore said.

“At this point, the investigation is wide open,” Chief Moore said. “Obviously this is a sensitive matter, and one that we will pursue. And the investigation will take us where it takes us.”
Under California law, all parties must consent to the recording of a private conversation or phone call. Otherwise, the person who made the recording could face criminal and civil penalties.
The recording, which was posted anonymously on Reddit and later obtained by The Los Angeles Times, features a conversation about maps proposed by the city’s redistricting commission and the councilmembers’ subsequent frustrations. It also captured the group, all Latino Democrats, using racist language to mock their colleagues while they planned to protect Latino political strength across the council districts.
At one point, Martinez can be heard uttering insults about another councilmember’s Black son, drawing laughter from de León and Cedillo. She specifically used the phrase “Parece changuito” — Spanish for “looks like a monkey” — during the backroom meeting in October 2021.
Martinez also tore into Los Angeles County’s district attorney, saying, “F–k that guy … He’s with the Blacks.” She went on to insult Jews and Armenians, while dubbing people from the Mexican state of Oaxaca “tan feos,” which is Spanish for “so ugly.”
Martinez gave up her post as city council president after the recordings were made public and then resigned from her council seat just days later. Herrera also has stepped down while de León and Cedillo have resisted the calls for their resignations.
